August 22- Sept 17, Drummond Island, Mackinaw City, Charlevoix, Onekama and on to Chicago
Today, August 28, we are in the Lansing area staying with our former neighbors, Dave and Tami, for the week while we see friends and family, have doctor and dentist appointments, etc. We pulled into Drummond Island on August 22 and went through US Customs without a problem.
From there we cruised by Mackinac Island and went into Mackinaw City on August 23 and stayed at the municipal marina. We enjoyed a very neat lasar light show that night at Mackinaw Crossings.
From there we left for Leland but because of high winds later in the afternoon, we pulled into Charlevoix on August 24 Charlevoix is a lovely area and we enjoyed walking around the town. We had a nice dinner visiting with Jim and Lisa on Kismet. We had storms that night that continued all the next day. So we stayed there until Sunday morning.
Since we arranged a rental car on Monday August 28 in Manistee, we left very early and went all the way to Onekama, almost 100 miles. We never did make it to Leland unfortunately. We pulled into Onekama (which is our former marina where we kept our SeaRay for a few years). Many of our friends were still staying over that night so we had a great time partying and catching up.
So this week, August 28-Sept 1, we are in Haslett but will go back to Onekama for the Labor Day weekend. Our friends, Beth and Cleo, will be joining us for the weekend. And other friends, Bob and Sally, will drive over Tuesday to see us. We plan to slowly make our way down the Michigan coast to Pentwater, Grand Haven, and Sagautuck and hope to see more family and friends along the way.
Friday Sept 1 – Friday Sept 8 - Onekama to Grand Haven MI
Can’t believe it’s Sept already.
We left Haslett Friday morning and returned to the boat in Onekama. The gang is going out for a fish fry so we went to Manistee with them for dinner. Saturday morning, we went over to the Manistee farmers market and bought lots of nice fruit and veggies and then did some grocery shopping. Beth and Cleo came up late morning and we had a good time catching up. Tonight is the Onekama Marine Labor Day party. The parry was fun, again a lot of catching up to do with everyone. We feel like celebrities returning home. Everyone has come over to get a tour of the boat and visit with us. Sunday Sept 3 is beautiful, very unusual for a Labor Day weekend in Michigan so we cruised to Frankfort with Beth and Cleo and had lunch and did a little shopping. Came home and grilled hot dogs on the boat. Even went down and made a fire in the pit. Monday Sept 4, Labor Day.. Beth and Cleo left early so we took the car and did some laundry. Later that evening we had pot luck with the friends that stayed over and even built a fire, a nice end to the holiday weekend.
On Tuesday Sept 5, Bob and Sally Hetrick drove over in the afternoon to visit. Showed us pics of Alaska – a trip they really enjoyed. Went out to eat at Blue Slipper, our favorite spot in Onekama.
We bid Onekama goodbye on Wednesday Sept 6 and headed toward Pentwater. Bill and Pat came over to greet us and took us on a walking tour of Pentwater. They own a condo there and invited us for a great fish dinner – a good visit.
Thursday Sept 7 we headed into Grand Haven for the weekend. Jamie and Jeff and the grandkids are coming up Saturday and Elaine and Dorwin will be up on Sunday. We’re looking forward to the visits and spending some time here in Grand Haven.
We spent the weekend in Grand Haven and enjoyed a great visit with Jamie, Jeff, Belle and Jayden. They got to stay on the boat for the night so it was just like camping for them. They deemed that the flybridge was the "poop deck" and set up their toys for their own personal playhouse. The municipal marina has a nice park and a playground for the kids. We did some exploring in town and enjoyed it all despite the rather cool weather. A sailboat race was held on Saturday so we were surrounded by sailboaters on Friday night. We stayed over on Monday because of rain and storms. Two other looper boats were with us - Grand Finale and Niagara Myst.
We all decided to leave Sept12 and came all the way to South Haven since the water was pretty smooth on Lake Michigan. I had wanted to go to Saugatuck for the day but we decided to needed to leave Lake Michigan as soon as we can.
It looks like another storm tonight so Thursday Sept 13 is a travel day to get us to New Buffalo and then to Chicago, hopefully for the weekend. We're looking forward to spending a couple days in the "windy city'. We had nasty seas for the last six miles coming into New Buffalo - the worst we've had so far on the trip. We ended up staying in New Buffalo on Sept 14 since it was another windy day. We enjoyed the city and found a wonderful fruit and veggie store and a nice grocery store for provisioning. We even walked the beach.
Chicago -We came into Chicago on Friday Sept 15 in calm seas. We are in a marina near Navy Pier and went over to check it out last night - even rode the big Ferris Wheel. On Saturday we walked a lot along the Riverwalk and to Michigan Ave. Did some shopping and plan a good dinner and a jazz club tonight. Heading to the Calumet River and then the Illinos tomorrow.
