Pickwick Dam to Aqua Harbor in Mississippi
On Saturday October 21, the sun came out and it was a gorgeous day cruising the Tennessee River, we even saw cows drinking at the water’s edge. Locked through Pickwick Dan and came into Pickwick State Park Marina in Tennessee for the weekend. On Monday October 23, we moved the boat over to Aqua Yacht Harbor Marina on the borders of Tennessee, Mississippi and Alabama - for an extended stay. ( The addess here is actaully Mississippi) This is where we’re meeting Chuck and Cheryl as we thought it would be nicer and more convenient. We got settled and Chuck and Cheryl arrived at about 1pm.
On Tuesday October 24, we took off for some sightseeing by car. Drove over to Shiloh Civil War Park and saw a movie at the visitor’s center and then took a driving tour of the battlefield. . This was the site of one of the bloodiest battles during the war... The battles lasted 2 days and there were 10,000 deaths and a total of 24,000 casualties. A battle fought on 40,000 acres just beside the Tennessee River. We learned a great deal about our country's history.
Some awesome memorials have been erected. Tennessee has put in the newest – just in 2005. And the memorial to the Confederate soldiers is very well done.
We did some sight seeing of the countryside and then went out to dinner. We got back in time so the guys could watch the Tigers in the World Series. This marina also has cable TV (not all of them do). Chuck is a sports fan so we know he would want to see the Series. Too bad Detroit lost!
On Wednesday October 25, it was cooler today and cloudy but we took the boat out in the morning and went up the Tenn-Tom, then back to the Tennessee up to the dam. In the afternoon, Chuck took us out for a drive up the Natchez Trace to Tupelo – about 60 miles. We’re seeing a lot of color here; think it’s because of the very cold nights. It has been misty most of the afternoon; it’s jean and sweatshirt weather here.
On Thursday October 26, we woke up to rain and cooler weather. Chuck and Cheryl left for home. We spent the day just cleaning the boat and staying inside keeping warm. On Friday October 27, we rented a car for the weekend for some extended day trips. The day was a little misty but we drove to Tupelo. Mississippi. It is the birthplace of Elvis Presley. The highlight of this excursion was the Tupelo Automotive Museum. A private collection of over 135 cars from an 1888 Benz to a 1994 Viper. It was one of the finest all around displays we've seen. They had almost 10 vehicles from each decade. Everything from a Hupmobile, Pierce Arrow, Cord, Ford, Chevy, Tucker, 1960 Chrysler 300, Masserati and more.
Then on Saturday October 28, we ventured into Memphis. Our first stop was the Peabody Hotel to see the ducks prance through the lobby to music. The ducks came down a red carpet to a fountain in the middle of the lobby where they proceeded to swim around. Jim got some good shots on his camcorder since he was up on the balcony.
Then to Graceland. The home is over 17,000 square feet although you can only tour the bottom floor. The rooms weren’t as big as I would have thought – the kitchen was actually small by todays standards. I also was surprised that the house had been built in the 1930s. It’s on 13 acres. All in all, it was very interesting and all the gold records and awards that Elvis won in his lifetime was quite impressive.
From there we went to Jim Neely’s Barbeque which was downtown Memphis and has been written up for prizewinning ribs, barbeque and sauce. It was pretty good and we had a little of each, definitely finger licking good. Then we drove across the Mississippi River into Arkansas just to say we’ve been there!
We’ve had a cold spell for awhile but since Friday it’s been in the 70s or 80s and warm nights again. We contracted to have an inverter put into the boat and that’s on order. They should be able to install it early next week and then we will be on our way down the Tenn-Tom through Mississippi and Alabama by the end of the week.
