Demopolis FL to Carrabelle FL

We explored one of the old homesteads in Appalachicola.
This is the Gibson Inn in Appalachicola, all decorated for the holidays.
This is our marina in Appalachicola, just a short walk from town.
The fishing fleet in Appalachicola, Fl. Cute town!
Ft. Walton Beach Florida, this is a free dock at the park which is all lit up for Christmas. Lovely!

Coming into Mobile, Alabama
November 24 - December 3
Demopolis, AL to Carrabelle, FL

Friday November 24, we left early and went through the Demopolis lock. I actually changed into shorts in the afternoon – very warm in the sun, in the 70s
. Arrived at Bobby’s fish camp before dark and got fuel and tied up for the night. Very rustic, just a face dock, no elecricity. A few campers parked near the office/restaurant. We went up to the restaurant and I really enjoyed the catfish filets – it was enough to feed at least two people. It was very lightly breaded and not overcooked. We ran the generator for awhile to warm up the place and it stayed warm enough during the night. We used our new inverter and put lights on for Linus to keep him a little warmer.
On Saturday November 25 ,we left early and went through the Coffeeville lock (which we think he still had some trouble with it as it took a long time for the lock doors to open). We had visions of being stuck in the lock! But we did exit and went on to anchor at the Alabama River cut off. The weather had started to warm up and the place was desolate with wonderful stargazing. The stars just glistened in the water. Since Thanksgiving it has been in the 70s during the day and in the 40 or 50s at night. We did use our inverter and the space heater but didn’t need it too much as the boat stayed pretty warm.
Sunday November 26, we cruised on and made it to Mobile, AL. Very industrial as we entered the Mobile River, fortunately it was a Sunday so it wasn’t very hectic with all the barges, etc. The water was calm as we entered the bay and went into Dog river marina.
On Monday November 27, we got our mail from the office and left about 8:30. Nice weather predicted for the next couple days so we want to take advantage of it and get into the Gulf ICW. The water on the Bay was still fairly calm as we crossed about 20 miles of it before we entered the ICW. We spotted Dolphins at about 11:05 entering the ICW. Cheers – we’re near Florida again. We can see some of the destruction from Hurricane Katrina, and also lots of rebuilding going on here. Pulled into Palafax Pier Marina in Pennsacola. On the way in we saw two of the Blue Angel planes flying overhead. We went into the downtonw area and had a wonderful dinner at the Fish House. I had sushi made with shrimp and asparagus. Very good and Jim had a really goot steak. I think it was the best food we’ve had since Chicago.
Tuesday, November 27 It's good to be back in Florida! The panhandle is very pretty and the sand here looks like sugar- it's that white. Stayed in Ft Walton Beach near Destin and they had their town all decorated and lit up for the holidays including an ice rink under a tent and we watched some kids ice skate. How neat!
Wednesday November 28, we are in Panama City and will go to Appalachicola tomorrow. A front is coming in so it may be next week before we can cross the gulf over to Tarpon Springs. We did make it to Appalachicola on Thursday. We’re here with several other boaters that we’ve met along the way. This is a cute town, we all went out to an Oyster Bar for dinner and enjoyed seeing the town which is all lit up for the holidays.
Today is Friday, December 1 – is it really December already! Sue is going with the girls to shop and lunch in town. We’re waiting out the weather but will probably move on to Carabelle next week. This is a big fishing area with lots of oysters and Sue has eaten wonderful oyster dinners for two night now. Neat town. On Saturday we went into town to the holiday craft show and bought some Christmas gifts
. Sunday December 3- We are now in Carrabelle, Fl. We think we can go on to Steinhatchee and then to Tarpon Springs next week.
